The church was inaugurated on June 8, 1997. It is dedicated to Saint George of Suelli, a bishop who lived between the 10th and 11th centuries. He is especially venerated in Sardinia, particularly in the region of Ogliastra, where he is the patron saint of the diocese. It is believed that he played a key role in the Christian conversion of this area.
The church was designed by architect Mimmo Pisu and follows a Byzantine style. Inside, there are three naves separated by twelve stone columns, and a large octagonal dome.
The altar area is simple. At the center is the altar table, with a painting of Christ behind it. In the background, there is a bas-relief showing a miracle performed by Saint George, next to a large olive tree nourished by a spring.
Next to the church is the parish house, which contains the parish offices, as well as rooms for the parish center and catechism classes.
In most towns, Saint George is celebrated on April 23, the date of his death according to tradition. However, in Tortolì, the celebration takes place each year in mid-May.
